Greek entrepreneur Thanasis Lazanas is planning to invest up to 100 million euros in the Greek economy, with his flagship project being the construction of an electric vehicles plant.
Lazanas restructured many enterprises before acquiring Arclif, a holdings company through which he is planning to create the first electric car factory in Greece. Arclif was better known for its holdings in Facebook and Spotify before they were listed, while in 2011-14 Arclif firms invested 33 million Swiss francs in startups and technology, mainly in the service sector, in German-speaking countries.
Lazanas is motivated by the idea that “all European enterprises have abandoned the business-to-consumer (B2C) market to the Americans. Europe must retrieve this market, or else we are lost,” he told Kathimerini. His talks with candidate partners in Greece are at an advanced stage, but he is still concerned over how the state will secure the necessary infrastructure for the organization of production.
Lazanas’s family is from Patra, but he was born and raised in Germany. He worked at Ford, but quit two weeks before the collapse of Lehman Brothers.
In 2014 he obtained authorization from General Motors to manufacture a mini electric version of the Hummer. Originally the idea was for a small number of cars, which started their trial circulation in mainly Asian cities. Later on the cars, which are very light, look a bit like golf carts and have a range of some 80 kilometers, started to catch on in Europe too.
Nowadays he produces the MEV Hummer HX in China. They cost 19,000 euros each and GM gets a share of the price. In 2014 he also had talks with the Turkish government. “I was told in Germany that moving to Turkey entailed certain risks. Therefore I started seriously considering Greece,” he said.
The Chinese factory has undertaken the production of MEV vehicles, one of the many subsidiaries of the Arclif Group. “We only produce after receiving an order. We will do the same in Greece, but I believe we can reach up to 2,000 cars per year and then 10,000,” he added.
Knowing the risk of investing in Greece, Lazanas will spread his 100 million euros to other markets beyond that of electric cars, such as local startups, property, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and information technology.
While Turkey continues its search for a “brave man” to develop and produce its own electric vehicle, a Swiss company announced that it can assemble its electric vehicles in Turkey.
Officials of MEV Cars, which also produces the MEV Hummer, which is a small copy of the American Hummers, which have been discontinued and are now history, say that they are still producing in China, but they are considering production in Europe. Nik Lazanas, one of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Arclif Group, which owns the majority of the company, states that they are not sure about the quality of the vehicles they produce in China, so they want to move production to Europe, and notes that they are reviewing some alternatives, including Turkey.
ADVERTISING-FREE SALES
Stating that they sold 220 vehicles in the last two years, 55 of which were sold in the last 9 months, Lazanas said, “This surprised us too. Because we never advertised,” he says. The vehicles are sold in America as well as Europe.
The company plans to sell 150 units this year and 300 next year and is considering Azerbaijan as well as Turkey. Stating that they want to expand their business in Europe, but the rich people in the former Soviet republics also show great interest in these vehicles, Lazanas said: “The majority of these customers order one or more vehicles. Moreover, they buy them from Switzerland.”
According to Lazanas, if the facility to be established in Turkey or another country produces 2 thousand units per year, it will be sufficient for the sustainability and profit of the business.
HAS A LICENSE FROM GM
In addition to these vehicles, MEV Cars still sells electric bicycles, motorcycles and even electric trucks in Switzerland. However, the real popular model is MEV Hummer.
Stating that a license was obtained for this vehicle before the Hummer company became history, Lazanas states that they are not for sale and that they are looking forward to partnerships. “We may be a very small manufacturer right now, but we have a lot of good ideas,” says Lazanas.
ONE THIRD OF THE REALITY
MEV Hummer HX is a fully electric recreational vehicle. While the real one is 4.8 meters long, this one is only 1.45 meters tall. Despite this, many of its features are like real cars. With its lithium battery, it can travel 110 km on a single charge and speed up to 70 km/h. While there is also a version that can be opened to the top, it can also be purchased with a solar panel roof if desired. The company, which offers different alternatives in terms of accessories, sold an example decorated with Swarovski stones. The starting price in Europe is around 15 thousand euros.
